Two field trips took place Saturday September 23, 2017.

Heritage in the Hinterland: Slocan – North Kootenay Lake Loop Tour

A trip dedicated to exploring the eclectic history of the West Kootenay. From the pit houses on the banks of the Slocan river, to the Japanese internment camps, and the sites of the Spirit Wrestlers, this tour took participants on a loop through the Silvery Slocan and along North Kootenay Lake. Participants learned about the past and present of the Sinixt and Ktunaxa, and the unique waves of migrants who have inhabited the area over time. While some were forced and others were drawn, this field trip considered the stories of conflict and peace in this isolated mountain landscape. This field trip included an option to soak at Ainsworth Hotsprings at the end of the day.

Transitioning to the New Economy – West Kootenay Tour

A trip dedicated to learning about economic development collaborations and companies that are transitioning or are emerging in response to the new rural economy. This day trip included visits to projects and companies that exemplify innovation, digital technology adoption and collaboration.
